Title: Fire Chief

Michael Kern started his career with the ALFPD as a Part-time Firefighter in January 1992. He was hired as a career Firefighter/EMT in February 1994. He rose through the ranks being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1998 to the rank of Battalion Chief in 2008. Chief Kern served as the Acting Assistant Chief during the executive staff transition in 2013. In 2015 he was appointed to the rank of Assistant Chief, and then in 2018 he was appointed to the rank of Deputy Chief. He also served as a member of the Division 2 Technical Rescue Team for several years.  As Battalion Chief he oversaw the maintenance and upkeep of all three ALFPD Fire Stations.

Chief Kern holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University.

Throughout his career Chief Mike has advanced his professional development, obtaining numerous Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) certifications. His most recent accomplishments have been the completion of the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) and Fire Investigator Certifications. In addition to his career with ALFPD, Mike has been an instructor at McHenry County College since 1998, instructing in the Basic Firefighter class. He received his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from McHenry County College.

Chief Kern is a member of the Illinois Fire Chief’s Association.
